Paper and pencil games to play with kids

In order to help kids recover from learning loss, we must ensure their emotional needs are met. Kids prioritize play, and with our support educators are leveraging play when teaching virtually in order to keep kids engaged, active, and to build community.

When we play, we engage our bodies, minds, and senses, creating opportunities for increased physical activity, learning, and connection with others. Play can even help relieve stress and support the development of important social-emotional skills, including communication and cooperation.

Fold and place in a container. Without speaking or using letters and symbols, players take turns being the artist and must draw a picture to help his or her teammates guess the phase, object, or title.

Teams earn points by guessing correctly. Set up a time limit for each turn. Keep it short, so the game moves. Forget Words with Friends on your smartphone. Play Word Ladders on a piece of paper. To start this two-person game, have each player choose a word with the same number of letters.

One word goes on the top rung and the other on the bottom. Each person sets up the word ladder on a piece of paper. The object is to change one letter at a time to make a word ladder between the two words.

The shortest ladder wins. If both players are stuck, rule the game a tie and start another word ladder. Make studying for those spelling and vocabulary test a bit more fun by making word scrambles. Players have to unscramble the words.

Give kids a time limit to unscramble the words. Just like the classic game, Connect Four can be played on paper, too. Set up a grid with six rows and seven columns. One player is O and the other is X.

The object is to get four in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. However, you may only mark a space with an X or an O that is the lowest in the column. This boredom gives way to creativity and ideas to get out of that state. However, if little ones are having a hard time coming up with something to do, then parents can help them by finding homemade activities that can be fun for everyone.

What about using paper and pencil games? Now that you have much more time for boredom, you may find yourself running out of ideas. Therefore, these games can surely get us out of more than one predicament. This game is a lot of fun and also helps to improve reasoning skills. You just need to create a drawing by making a series of numbered points. Then, when your child joins those points with a marker or crayon, the figure will appear.

Your children will have to join the numbered points with lines until they get the silhouette of the drawing. The first player will draw the head of the monster. The next player will continue drawing the shoulders and trunk. One of the players will draw a character or anything that comes to mind and the others have to guess what it is.

On a sheet of paper, a parent will draw a maze and your children will have to find their way out. On one side, for example, you can draw a child, a rabbit or anything else you can think of and, at the other end, a ball, some carrots, etc.

The mission is to find the exit by drawing a line from one end to the other.
