I had to create a new Web Template. In the blank area to the left, you can add your own text by editing the Page Copy through the Portal Content Editor.

There is one last item to discuss concerning Page Templates. It includes the top navigation and the entire footer section of the Portal website.

This most likely will only surface if you decide to create your own Page Templates, but why would we do this? Not too long ago, one client wanted to create a specific print-only version of a custom page.

They wanted header, navigation, and footer removed. Sometimes you need to retrieve Dynamics data outside of some of the standard Web Pages. Now that you know the importance of Page Templates and the difference between Rewrite and Web Template types, you can begin building or utilizing existing Web Templates to create visually-appealing Portal websites.

Dynamics Portals can be provisioned as one of three portal types and includes a number of features. There are add-on solutions you can install to integrate with Dynamics Field Service and Project Service Automation apps. While Dynamics Portals come with many features OOTB, Portal can also be configured and extended to create your own forms, views, and templates as well. Often we would need to customise the portal to provide unique customer experiences which standard configuration capabilities fall short.

Liquid Templating capabilities become handy for these scenarios. In this diagram, you can see that a Page should be associated with a Page Template. A Page Template can be associated with a Web Template.

It can be associated with a physical ASPX page which resides on the server. The difference is that a Page Template is just a pointer to where the Template is stored.

A Web Template, on the other hand, includes the actual coded design on the record itself. The Rewrite Url field must also be populated. The Web Template lookup must also be populated. I will walk you through series of basic to advanced examples of using Liquid to create custom templates. Liquid is an open-source template language created by Shopify and originally written in Ruby.

The code base was ported to. NET as an another open-source project called DotLiquid.
