Alt codes for windows xp laptop
Didn't work. Tried what might have been the "number pad" too, M,J,K,L, etc. Hold the Alt key down while typing the number of the code. It is as simple as that. I use it in Spanish. I know to hold down the alt key and type the number. It works on my desktop. It does not work on my laptop. My laptop has no num pad, hence no num lock key and no scroll lock key.

My keyboard doesn't have the alternative "number pad" either. Here is a link to the HP documen t on how to do that. I thank you, Erico, for the information, however I'm afraid it's beyond my limited understanding of Bios, etc. Thanks for trying to help! I wish HP didn't have to make things this complicated.

IBM developed a method to place the characters that can not be typed by a keyboard on the screen: while keeping the Alt key down, typing the code defined for the character via the numeric keypad.
The system which interprets this action and places the corresponding character at the cursor's location is BIOS. These codes became so popular so that Microsoft, even though developed a new set of codes, decided to keep them.
